Most often, patients are asked to wear a brace for six weeks after surgery, and especially when a meniscus repair is done. The knee is protected and swollen, the brace is worn to stabilize for a period of time while the wound heals.meniscus surgery recovery (ad)

Initial Recovery Phase

The first two weeks are critical so you need to follow your surgeons advice closely. The brace may have to be worn 24/7, including during sleep. Following that first week, some patients may want to sleep without the brace if it feels comfortable.

Getting Out of the Brace

Six weeks is the average time at which most surgeons will determine if you are doing well enough to stop wearing a brace. Range of motion, swelling amount, general knee stability all impact this decision. You will be able to take the brace off when and if your doctor feels you are strong enough to do so.

Why Physical Therapy is Important

One important aspect in the rehabilitation process is physical therapy. By doing the right exercises, you can help ease back off the brace and start promoting muscle support around your knee to naturally limit the instability.

Meniscus surgery rehabilitation is generally six weeks in a brace, but the recovery can be highly individual. Be sure to speak with your healthcare provider for individual guidance.
