Understanding the Causes

Static Electricity Build-Up: Static can cause tape to stick in certain areas and make the tape play too slow. This tends to happen more so in drier climates.

Quick Fixes
Eject and Handle the Tape:

Grip the tape securely in your hand and tap it three times against a flat object. This will help to get the tape aligned in there again.
Reinsert and Rewind:
Re-insert cassette in player.
Roll the tape back about a minute, press play again. Doing so can relieve tension and help speed up playback.
Check for Mechanical Issues:
Check for any dust or wear on the pinch roller, capstan. Speed issues caused by slippage can usually be solved with a good clean in isopropyl alcohol from the problem components.
Mind on Environmental Factors:
Antistatic spray = yes (or check that you have enough humidity at home — i.e. free the grassmower from shack).
Adjust Speed Settings:
If you are lucky enough to have a variable-speed cassette player, make sure it is properly calibrated (more on how to do this correctly in the manual)8.
