Step by step guide: How to get deep scratches out of leather
Leather items with deep scratches can be ugly, but you can use the right method to reduce their effect. If the leather scratches are really deep, this is one of our favorite methods.
Supplies Needed
Depending where on the surface of your belting leather that inks to be removed, you may need a few more items or just 1-2. In addition to said Meguiar’s APC and degreaser, you might also require:Leather cleanerorDistilled white vinegar
Soft cloth or rag
Colorless shoe polish
Step-by-Step Process
Use leather cleaner OR vinegar and water, on a soft cloth. Gently dab rather than rub.
Then, let the cleaned space dry out in full air.
You can also apply a thin coat of clear shoe polish to the scratch when it is completely dry. Place some shoe conditioner on the leather and work it into the material using a circular motion.
Pay some polish onto a clean cloth and buff the area.
As an extra precaution, use a small amount of leather conditioner.
Additional Tips
You may need to do this process several times with very deep scratches
Always test on a hidden area of product first
For high-value or antique leather goods, you might even want to have the repair performed by a professional.
Application, back and forth with patience and care can take deep leather scratches a very long way toward improvement. Keep in mind also, some scars may never completely disappear and it can be charming eventually with the character of leather.
