If your leather steering wheel is beginning to show signs of wear or damage, you can repair it by following these instructions. How to Fix and Resurface a Leather Steering Wheel
Clean and Prepare the Surface
First things first, give the steering wheel a good going over with leather cleaner to remove dirt and grime. Apply the cleaner with a soft brush. Clean with a microfiber cloth.
Fill Cracks and Gouges
For deep cracks or gauges apply (ad) to fill the voids. Spread the filler with a plastic spreader and let it dry completely between applications. Once set and sanded down with 1000-grit wet sandpaper.
With minor surface cracks, you may employ a leather binder to aid seal and go over the leathers fibers.
Recolor and Refinish
Use a leather dye or pigment, in the original color. Instead, apply a light coat and let each layer dry. Top it off with some leather sealant, to preserve the fix and shine of the shoe.
Texture and Polish
Use a leather grain pad or embossing tool to reapply the original texture of your car’s leather. Next, apply a leather conditioner to the entire wheel for an additional layer of protection and will also steam out minor scuffs that may have been on your wheel. That said, it is possible to restore a worn steering wheel using some patience and the right elements. This repair will hold up with regular cleaning and conditioning.
